Paul Hewson, 10 May 1960, Dublin, Eire; vocals), The Edge (b. David Evans, 8 August 1961, Barking, Essex; guitar), Adam Clayton (b. 13 March 1960, Chinnor, Oxfordshire, England; bass) and Larry Mullen (b. Laurence Mullen, 1 October 1960, Dublin, Eire; drums) initially played Rolling Stones and Beach Boys cover versions in a group named Feedback. They then changed their name to the Hype before finally settling on U2 in 1978.

U2 was born in 1978 when all the current members were students at Dublin's Mount Temple School. The teenage U2 made a local name for themselves in their native Dublin and released a three track EP on CBS called U23 in 1979. Their first three records (BOY, OCTOBER and WAR) were produced by Steve Lillywhite and won the band loyal fans throughout Europe and the US. In 1984 working with Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno they created THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE. On the strength of Pride (In The Name Of Love) their biggest single to date, they continued to tour into 1985
