The Who: "Live At Leeds" |
 |
The Who Live at Leeds has the reputation of being one of the greatest live performances ever released and MCA/Universal Music are certainly earning their money back on this one. This album was first released on CD in the 80's as a budget reissue as part of MCA Records digital conversion from LP to CD format. In 1995, MCA Records upgraded their Who catalogue with expanded reissues of all of the Who’s albums that featured detailed liner notes and bonus tracks on each CD. At that time Live at Leeds was released in limited edition LP sized box, complete with reproductions of all of the albums original contents, and a standard jewel case package as a single-disc restoration more than doubled the original six-track album.
It contained all of the non-Tommy material that was performed that
evening.
This latest two-disc edition of the Who's Live At Leeds concert
recorded February 14, 1970, at Leeds University should be the final and
definite version of this performance. The main reason for the purchase of
this latest Universal Music edition by fans would be the fact of the
entire rock opera Tommy, as performed that night, is finally released intact.

While impressive, that performance merely scratches the surface of this.
This Deluxe Edition features the Who's entire performance over the expansion to a two-CD format and now contains much of the previously edited material such as stage dialogue between the band and the audience to reflect the actual pacing of the show. The entire project has been supervised by Pete Townshend and thanks to the latest improvements in digital sound transfer, has never sounded better. The CD packaging itself is impressive, reproducing the original albums "bootleg" concept in a double fold-out cardboard case complete with photos of the original albums contents. The 28- page booklet is packed with rare photos and detailed information on the original concert, a song by song commentary and technical information on the original recording. The entire set is housed in an enhanced plastic slip cover to protect the album. This is the definitive re-issue of this album and a must-own release for any rock & roll collection.
