The Wallflowers Biography | |
|
Yeah, you’ve heard everything about The Wallflowers before: the massive success and the fact that it’s fronted by none other that Bob Dylan’s equally ambitious song, Jakob Dylan. You may or may not have also heard that The Wallflowers made it to the top of the charts and achieved stardom before anyone realized who, exactly, the lead singer was (or where exactly he came from).
Suburb pedigree or not, the fact of the matter is The Wallflowers were the band to emerge in 1996, and their second release Bringing Down The Horse quickly achieved multi-platinum success. Perhaps even more remarkable in the fairy tale of The Wallflowers is, unbelievably, they are talented. Critical praise came in the early days and the music media only shook its head in collective wonder when finding out “the truth".
Based out of Los Angeles, The Wallflowers can best be described as a splendid return to the roots of rock’n’roll (ironic, isn’t it?). This is a rare thing indeed in a day when rock is in many cases only a passing memory, pushed aside by “darling genres" such as bubblegum-pop, punk, electronic beats and Britney Spears. It’s refreshing to hear a modern band that can produce the same vibe as Tom Petty but keep better haircuts.

For their latest release Breach (Interscope Records), The Wallflowers teamed with producer Andrew Slater (Fiona Apple, Macy Gray) and singer/songwriter Michael Penn. Approaching the creation of the new record very business-like, Dylan worked long hours in his home studio in addition to countless band sessions. “Being around the instruments every day, I felt I was more inspired and I could get more done", Dylan states about his creative approach. “I needed to make sure the songs worked in their simplest forms. No matter how many drum fills or how hard the band plays, the songs have to stand on their own".
The songs from Breach stand on their own finely, replicating the laid-back sound of Bringing Down the Horse without duplicating it. Included in the album’s ten tracks is the band’s latest hit single, “Hand Me Down". What was handed down to the young Jakob Dylan? Let’s see…only talent success and humility. Not that that matters…
