 Brian Setzer: "Vavoom"
As the summer draws to an end, all those memorable summer tunes that we all love (and in some cases love to hate) begin to fade into the past. But as this diminishment is taking place, new music nevertheless continues to be created.

Take Brian Setzer. This former Stray Cat has just completed a swingin' new album along with his famous Orchestra, filled with old 40's big band covers and new material from "the boss" himself. Vavoom is Setzer's follow-up to 1998's The Dirty Boogie, a big player in the late-nineties swing explosion that featured the hit "Jump Jive and Wail". Vavoom has been described as being "hip-hop tinged", yet staying true to Setzer's rock-a-billy style.

The listener will be pleased to discover some familiar songs while listening to this 14-track Interscope release. Classics like "Mack The Knife", "Pennsylvania 6-5000" and "In The Mood"

are all found on Vavoom, with a modern edge added by Setzer and his hot 16-piece band. Also found on the album is Setzer's latest single, "If You Can't Rock Me", your basic fast-tempoed swing-rock tune. Brian's attitude throughout the album seems to be that boys - excuse the corny reference- just wanna have fun.

Vavoomlooks like it will be a great party album, with Setzer's bad-boy rockin' swing attitude and fun, vigorous music. The album's value as a listening record may be disputable, however, as the songs on Vavoom reflect several tunes on The Dirty Boogie. However, don't be discouraged- for those who have long awaited Setzer's next studio recording and truly dig Setzer's swingin' sound may find themselves "getting in the mood" sooner than they may have imagined.
