Otis Rush has been singing the blues for a long, long time. He arrived in Chicago from his native Philadelphia, Mississippi in 1948. He met Muddy Waters and instantly knew what he wanted to do with his life. His innovative style made the west side sit up and take notice.
In 1956 he signed with Cobra Records and made his mark in the blues community with his recording of "I Can't Quit You Baby". 1956-58 was an exciting and successful time for Rush, and he wrote and recorded a number of hits. Cobra Records closed after this and he moved from label to label. His life took make twists and turns, and what should have been a stellar career was plagued by bad luck. He didn't just sing the blues - he lived them.
Although Otis Rush had gone into retirement for a while, he still performs, and remains one of the greatest blues artists in the United States. In his 50 years of recording and playing the blues, nothing has topped the tracks on this release of The Essential Otis Rush.
