Live at the Halifax Metro Centre (July 23, 2001)
Florida-based band O-Town have emerged from the ruckus as one of the most popular boy bands in the world. It helps, however, to "come out" through endless airtime on your very own reality television show where viewers, fans or not, have little choice but to watch your trials and tribulations until they find they like you, or at least like to watch you fail.

O-Town are not a good band - and will have no long-term influence on music - but they don't make the insinuation that they will. They are just a small group of guys who were thrown together to sing the sweetest vocals they could muster while shaking their bon-bons until the world comes to an end, and make as much money for themselves and their record label along the way. So far this formula is working to a T, as last night's concert would suggest, and the Florida boys are laughing while they can.

Picture a plethoria of under-dressed teenie-boppers in their finest moments; excited, loud and gleeful that their parents were left far behind (or at least a couple of seats to the left). Picture the irony of teary-eyed fan after teary-eyed fan leaving a small teddy bear, a flower, or even a beanie baby with the over-whelmed security guards in false hopes of a later phone call from an even more over-whelmed band member. Picture the general dispair of the twenty-plus audience member discovering in horror that they forgot their brand new ear plugs in the glove compartment of their cars, and alas cannot protect their ears from the deafening shrieks of good-intentioned girls with misplaced enthusism.

Act one, a Britney Spears/Jennifer Lopez clone who offered little but the predictable dance moves without the strength of even one recognized single for the crowd to go nuts to. Kaci had the right-coloured lip gloss, the expected combination of a tight shirt and even tighter jeans but lacked that little 'ol thing that brings it all together: talent.

The second act was a stark improvement as Niagra Falls, Ontario natives Wave took to the stage backed by the the recent success of their single, "California". Crowd recognition factored in to a professional, fun performance that achieved it's most important goal: building the audience into a frenzy for the main act...those little boys from Florida.

The boys opened to a ear-piercing roar, 'wow'ing the crowd with their hit "All for Love", which would set the tone for the evening. Funky, fast dance moves with tight vocals and actually pretty decent backing instrumentalists helped O-Town prove that although they're not ever going to be known as the Beatles of the 00's, they can still entertain an audience and have some fun in doing so.

Verdict: if you desire a lesson in the type of music that will make a generation strong, this show's not the place for you. However, if you're just looking for a little chill-out time to relax with ear drum-busting company...this is your defining concert.
