Leona Naess: "I Tried to Rock You But You Only Roll" |
 |
MCA Records
I Tried to Rock You But You Only Roll, Leona Naess' follow-up to her
debut album Comatised, starts off with promise. The opening track, "Mexico", is a
touching ballad about trying to repair a damaged relationship: "Come with
me to Mexico/We can laugh about the love we used to know/Yeah I'm ridden
with a fear/But please answer when I call you dear." Unfortunately, the
rest of the album doesn't deliver on that promise.
There are shades of Sheryl Crow in "Mayor of Your Town".

There are fun
songs with a disco feel, like "All the Stars" and "Boys Like You".
But
once you get past those, the rest of the songs start to blur together. By
the final track, "Promise to Try", even Naess sounds tired.
Overall, there's nothing outstanding about I Tried to Rock You But You
Only Roll. Naess should ease up on the breathiness and add some depth to
her lyrics. The potential is there; she just needs to stop skimming the
surface.
