Long Beach Dub Allstars: Wonders of the World
Formed from the tragic end of the praised band Sublime (due to the death of its lead Brad Nowell), the Long Beach Allstars bring together the best of the world it left behind with strong new influences. Former Sublime members Eric Wilson (bass) and Bud Gaugh (drums) continued the diverse traditions of their initial success by surrounding themselves with an even more diverse grouping of musicians and musical talent.

LBDA's debut Right Back met to favourable reviews, but critics still commented on the fact that the band was weaker without the unique songwriting abilities of Nowell. The new band remained unfazed, and stuck by its initial plans of releasing an edgier version of its former self.

Wonders of the World, the band's latest release, is a delightful unification of sounds that stand as a crash course on musical genres. When the time came to sit down to pick and choose a style, these boys got confused and grabbed them all.

Not content to exist only as a electronic band, a rock band, a reggae band, or any other manner of band, Long Beach Dub Allstars emerge as each, and all.

"Sunny Hours", featuring Will.I.Am from the hip-hop group The Black Peas perhaps most resembles the band's former identity, jumping around in gleeful abandonment before gliding into the reggae-twinged "Listen To DJ's". "Every Mother's Dream" aims to be the bad-ass punk version of the Long Beach Dub Allstars, which is about the only unfortunate track in the mix. Despite the band's best intentions, the track doesn't mix in the presence of other, well-thought out and beautifully executed tunes. The band works best when it sticks to hypnotic beats surrounded by engaging melody and clever rhymes, like "Life Goes On".

Overall, Wonders of the World is another strong brick in the wall for a band still searching for its ultimate identity. Its another step away from Sublime, and another step closer to prosperity as Long Beach Dub Allstars.
