Bruce Guthro Concert Review: October 2, 2001"
Where once there stood a fiddle there now stands a saxophone.

A visual cue that something has changed. The sound on Guthro, the latest release from Cape Breton native Bruce Guthro, is more pop and electric than it ever was on his label debut, Of Your Son, yet the albums compliment each other well.

Bruce Guthro took the stage last night at the Imperial Theatre in Saint John, New Brunswick as part of a tour supporting his new album. It's been two years since he last performed in the port city and he's back now with a new, young back-up band.

With no opening act, Guthro had the task of entertaining hundreds of fans for two and a half hours. This may sound like a daunting task for many bands in a theatre setting but he and his band hardly broke a sweat. You know it's the mark of a true professional when they can make something difficult look so easy. The show kicked off with the current single, 'Disappear', and then quickly jumped into the pop blast of 'Wonderful Night'.

And a wonderful night it was. With the change in sound, it was nice to see that some things don't change. Guthro still managed to create a quick rapport with the audience through his sense of humour and touching stories. His opening of the second set with a demonstration of some of his 'drunk walks' set the audience into howls of laughter and was just one example of how easily he can endear himself to a crowd.

One of the true highlights of last night's show was Guthro's habit of introducing many of his songs with touching stories and quirky anecdotes. One such story was of how his uncle Ivey once refused to shake the hand of Brian Mulroney during a Trenton car plant strike because he didn't believe in the man's politics. The story segued beautifully into the next verse of the song 'Ivey's Wall' - the verse about just that event that didn't make it onto the CD.

I've heard people talk about how real and down to earth the performer is. His easy smile and 'average joe' approach to his performance does nothing to dispel this thought.

With just an acoustic guitar and his rich baritone voice, Guthro filled every nook and cranny of the Imperial Theatre with spirit and emotion. The songs were a mix of new and old with a couple of tunes that only get performed live. He had the crowd on their feet and singing along with 'Good Love', sitting mesmerized in their seats with 'Don't Go' and wailing with laugher on 'Roses'.

From the opening strains of a haunting flute to the ringing of the final applause and standing ovation, Guthro held the crowd in the palm of his hand and had them run the gamut of emotions. If his show proved anything, it's that sometimes you don't have to look far to find great talent - it can be in your own backyard.
