Where once there stood a fiddle there now stands a saxophone.
A visual cue that something has changed. The sound on Guthro, the latest release from Cape Breton native Bruce Guthro, is more pop and electric than it ever was on his label debut, Of Your Son, yet the albums compliment each other well.
Bruce Guthro took the stage last night at the Imperial Theatre in Saint John, New Brunswick as part of a tour supporting his new album. It's been two years since he last performed in the port city and he's back now with a new, young back-up band.
With no opening act, Guthro had the task of entertaining hundreds of fans for two and a half hours. This may sound like a daunting task for many bands in a theatre setting but he and his band hardly broke a sweat. You know it's the mark of a true professional when they can make something difficult look so easy. The show kicked off with the current single, 'Disappear', and then quickly jumped into the pop blast of 'Wonderful Night'.
And a wonderful night it was. With the change in sound, it was nice to see that some things don't change. Guthro still managed to create a quick rapport with the audience through his sense of humour and touching stories. His opening of the second set with a demonstration of some of his 'drunk walks' set the audience into howls of laughter and was just one example of how easily he can endear himself to a crowd.
