You can feel the loss of Tobin Sprout in Guided by Voices two subsequent
albums. Sprout was George Harrison to Robert Pollard’s dual alter egos
Lennon and McCartney (or Roger Daltey and Pete Townsend). Tobin was always
called ‘the other guy’, or ‘the dark horse of GBV’, but he’s starting to
prove he can hold his own, on “Circus People", his third record. Yes, the
oblique titles like “Smokey Joe’s Perfect Hair" or “Lucifer’s Flaming Hour"
remain, and his lighter touch toward song-writing is oddly soothing. A
change of pace. He’s not the prolific well of songs that Pollard is, these
are still quite spry tunes, and aren’t just of interest to the legion of
people grabbing up anything related to GBV. He played all the instruments,
minus the drums on a couple of songs, and did the art-work with his wife, so
it’s highly improbably that Tobey is sitting around drinking beer these
days. Very good.
