Andrew Gilpin - "Multiplicity" | |
|
We've all heard stories of artists like Jimi Hendrix who have written and performed amazing music yet have never taken a lesson in their life. Andrew Gilpin, an amazing classical pianist and composer, is one of these incredible artists. Completely self-taught on the piano, this Edmonton- born musician has ingeniously combined classical music, jazz, and a bit of poetry in his album entitled Multiplicity. Lively, animated piano parts and several different instrumentalists and voices make Multiplicity fresh, charming, and unique.
The first part of the album, entitled "Sonata for Flute and Piano", is an animated, contemporary arrangement that features flute virtuoso Leslie Allt, bassist Peter Telford, and Gilpin on piano. "Sonata" includes three movements, which combine to make a bright, fast-moving, and wonderfully unique piece.
The next section of the CD, a clever rendition of the well-known Robert Service poem "The Cremation of Sam McGee", features the Wayne Gilpin Singers, a 35-voice chamber choir who proceed to sing all fifteen verses of this lengthy, yet humorous poem. Each verse is sung differently from the last, giving the song color and the poem a new dimension.

The second half of the album is a collection of hymns featuring Cantelina, a professional vocal ensemble based in Toronto. Beautiful harmonies add life to songs such as the powerful "Gloria" and the crisp, upbeat Laudamus Te. Soprano Wendy Humphreys adds the talent of her full and serene voice to numbers like "Et In Terra Pax", a slow, reverent hymn which is complete with just a single piano and the various voices which combine to produce to the song's simple beauty.
It is incredible how classical music, having been present for so many years, is still alive and well in today's world and is being interpreted and added to as a result of the creativity of innovative new artists. Multiplicity is refreshingly different and yet still finds a way to pay homage to the music's centuries-old roots. Gilpin's unique new album is rich, satisfying, and is sure to please the ears of anyone who comes across it.
